This is a community based project was delivered by the Ancre Somme Association Scotland and funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund that enabled local people and school pupils to develope an understanding of the impact the Great War had on families in the Whitburn area.

Using original documents, contemporaneous news items, local and national databases and other archives they have pieced together the stories behind the names on the various War Memorials, learnt how their war was fought and how their families and the community were affected.

By recreating the personal stories and developing education presentations, children and adults have brought to the fore the human impact of WWI on a local town like Whitburn.

Children have gained an understanding of the war’s reality for local people and gained some knowledge about how to research stories of their own starting only with a name on a memorial.
